5 craft projects to keep you inspired this winter

We all know the positive impact crafts can have on both our physical and mental wellbeing. From alleviating symptoms of anxiety and depression to helping us deal with loneliness, a creative project is a great way to stay busy during winter whilst also enjoying the positive psychological benefits. We have rounded up some of our favorite projects from creatives and makers on social media to keep you inspired this winter, whilst also creating something beautiful for your home.
1. Patchwork & Quilting
Quilting is a great way to use up old scraps of fabric from around the house, making it both affordable and sustainable. From cushion covers to vibrant patchwork squares, Instagram has a wealth of inspiration to get you started.
Ceramicist and illustrator Rachel Cocker regularly shares photos of her gorgeous patchwork and quilted pieces. Using earthy tones in bold patterns her designs are simple yet effective and the perfect inspiration for your own cushion cover.
Artist and colour specialist Jenna Valoe excels in vibrant and playful quilt designs. Her kaleidoscope of colors and shapes will brighten up even the dreariest of winter days.
2. Vegetable & Potato Printing
Using the simplest of materials that can be found in the kitchen, vegetable printing is a great activity for the whole family. From graphic potato designs, to ink made from beetroot, this would be a great activity for home-made Christmas cards.
Block printer and textile specialist Molly Mahon took to Instagram this summer with a series of potato printing workshops and ideas for the Instagram community. Her stories are full of family friendly projects and ideas using the simplest of materials - a potato!
American textile brand Block Shop Textiles also shared on Instagram a series of crafty tutorials to keep us inspired and entertained during lockdown. Their first was vegetable printing using beetroot dyes. The Block Shop account is full of inspiration from their use of graphic, bold prints to their textile manufacturing in India.
3. Candlestick Holders
Another craft project spear-headed by Block Shop Textiles, these fun candlestick holders are simple to make using papier-mâché and old rope. They can then be decorated with colourful and vibrant designs as seen below.
4. Lampshade Painting
Breathing life into a tired old lampshade could be the perfect lift a room needs this winter. There are a few options including embroidery or adding a trim to the base, but we are loving these painted ones below.
Decorative artists Tess Newall is the master of paint! From gorgeous wooden chairs to hand-made botanic print wallpaper, we are always coveting her delicate and intricate designs. Take inspiration from her Bloomsbury-esque lampshades using tonal patterns.
Artist and illustrator Camilla Perkins is well know for her bold animal drawings and vibrant colours, and like everything else she does we love this hand-painted fish lampshade!
5. Macrame
For those looking to master the decorative knot building techniques of macrame, there are loads of videos and tutorials out there. Whether you are making an intricate wall hanging or a plant holder, we love the simple and classic designs of textile artist Gina Marris
